The
Department of Physical Therapy offers an entry-level Master of
Physical Therapy (MPT) program. Students interested in physical
therapy as
a profession need to choose and complete a non-physical therapy
bachelor’s degree to prepare for admission to the professional
program. YSU majors with Pre-PT tracks are Biology, Exercise Science,
and Psychology.
By
being a YSU student, however, you have an opportunity to apply
and begin the MPT while you still complete the undergraduate
degree.
Described as a 3+3 curriculum, students spend the first three college
years completing general education requirements, requirements
for
the major, and MPT prerequisite courses. Students who meet eligibility
requirements (including 3.0 GPA) may apply at this point. Admitted
students, based on a selective admission process, must indicate
that they will finish their undergraduate degrees no later than
the end of the first fall term in the MPT program. In this way,
the fourth college year is shared with the first year in the graduate
program. See the diagram below for a depiction of 3+3.

To
accomplish the pre-professional phase in a timely manner, students
need to be carefully advised regarding their undergraduate progress.
A student may, of course, choose to complete the undergraduate degree
and then apply to the professional program. This is also the mechanism
used by transfer students, in additional to completion of prerequisite
courses and application eligibility. The PT program, nonetheless,
remains 3 years in length for all admitted students.
The
MPT begins each summer and consists of three years of rigorous full-time
courses and clinical education experiences. Outside employment during
this time is not recommended unless related to PT and limited to
a minimum number of hours. All avenues for financial assistance
should be pursued. The University, College, and Department will
provide information in this regard.
Students are also encouraged to join the Future PT Club and stay
involved with the PT Department while completing their undergraduate
preparation. Regular information sessions are provided by the PT
Department and appointments can be made through the department office
