Community and School Health Programs


The school health program offers the Bachelor of Science in Education (B.S. in Ed.) in Health Education. This program can be completed in eight semesters if students average 16 hours per semester. To be admitted to the school health program a student must have a minimum GPA of 2.0. To continue enrollment in the first two years of the school health major, students must maintain a 2.0. If a student falls below a 2.0 GPA prior to achieving 62 hours, the student can only re-apply to the major after a minimum GPA of 2.0 has been achieved. Students seeking this licensure must apply for upper-division status in the Beeghly College of Education upon completion of 62 semester hours, and must maintain the grade point requirements of the college of education.

The program is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and is approved by the Ohio Department of Education.

Majors with a GPA of 2.5 and above are eligible for membership in Eta Sigma Gamma, the National Health Education Honorary. The YSU chapter of Eta Sigma Gamma conducts several service learning projects each year which provide opportunities to gain experience in health education practice.

The B.S. in Education in Health enables graduates to receive licensure for multi-age school health teaching for grades pre-kindergarten through grade 12. The curriculum will enable majors to teach according to the National Health Education Standards, and meet the standards of the American Association of Health Education.

• HSC 3731 Drug Use and Abuse
• HSC 3757 Health and Disease
• HSC 3791 Community Health
• ALHTH 3740 Pathology/Infectious Disease
• AHLTH 4804 Stress Management
• AHLTH 4808 Environmental Health
• AHLTH 5807 Epidemiology.

Students must also complete all education courses required for multi-age licensure. The curriculum concludes with a semester of health education student teaching.
